Christmas is a time to give to those in need. It’s a time to be with the ones we love and celebrate. It’s a time to overspend.

Too many families spend more than they can afford on gifts, food and decorations. However, you don’t have to break the bank to have a happy holiday season. Here are a few ways to save money while spreading some Christmas cheer.

Create a Budget

Everyone vows to spend less at the beginning of the holiday season. However, after a few trips to the mall and outlet stores, those promises are long forgotten. Make a detailed spending budget and stick with it! Account for all holiday spending – gifts, food and decorations. Keep a spending journal and record what you buy each time you shop. If you’re getting to close to breaking your budget, re-evaluate your shopping plan and cut back where you can.

Make a Detailed List

Don’t go to the mall and wing it! Make a detailed list of who and what you need to shop for. Avoid malls when you can, but if you do go to one be sure to make list of stores that you want to visit. Buy only what’s on your list from the designated stores. Keeping to your list and focusing your shopping trip will help you avoid costly impulse buys.

Start Your Shopping Early

If you wait until Dec. 24th to do all your shopping, you’re bound to buy anything (regardless of cost) out of sheer desperation. Start shopping early. Make a few shopping trips before the Thanksgiving holiday to avoid the mayhem and capitalize on the early Christmas deals. If you’re shopping for your kids, try buying a toy or two each month and hide them in a safe spot. This way you’re spreading the expense over a longer period of time and avoiding a huge credit card bill in the middle of January.

Use Coupons!

You can find a coupon for everything! Use them every time you shop and the savings will add up. Go to your favorite store’s website and sign up for their e-newsletter. Some stores send you savings and coupons daily! Go through your list and do web searches to see if you can find any coupons! Check up on money saving blogs to get news on the latest deals.

Do the Homemade Thing

Homemade Christmas presents have gotten a bad rap over these past few years. However, there is nothing wrong with making a one-of-a-kind gift for your loved ones. Explore your creativity and think outside of the box! My sister used to make everyone their own personalized Christmas ornaments. I like to make homemade jewelry. Scrapbooks and picture calendars are great ways to say “I love you” without spending a fortune. And if the people on your list have a sweet tooth, try making cookies or christmas candy. You don’t have to go to an expensive store to find the perfect gift for your loved ones.

Have a Potluck Holiday Feast

My mom spends more money on Christmas dinner than she does on an entire month’s worth of groceries! It’s very expensive to host and feed a big clan. So instead of dropping hundreds at the grocery store, ask everyone to bring a dish to your house. You’ll cut down on costs and get to experience a diverse holiday dinner.

Email Christmas Cards

If you are used to sending out cute postcards with pictures of your brood in front of the Christmas tree, you can still do that without spending an arm and a leg on postage and printing. Use Photoshop or some similar program to make an electronic postcard. You can send it to all of your closest friends and family without the hassle of going to the post office.

Make Your Own Ornaments

Those Disney ornaments with Pooh and Piglet are cute as can be, but they also are expensive. Adorn your tree with homemade ornaments to cut costs. With some foam board and glitter, you can make beautiful decorations that add just the right touch of pizzaz to your tree. Not only will you be saving money, but you’ll be spending quality time with your family. If you aren’t the crafty kind, get some old, glitzy earrings to add a little bling.

Go Easy on the Lights

Everyone loves a beautifully lit Christmas tree! However, those little Christmas lights can use a ton of energy. Use them sparingly. Make sure to turn your lights off when you’re not at home. Not only will you save some money on your electricity bill, but you’ll also be doing your part for the environment.

Remember, Christmas isn’t about buying the most expensive present or cooking the most lavish dinner spread. It’s about spending time with the ones you love and THAT doesn’t cost a thing.

Here are some inexpensive ways you can reduce your impact and put some money back in your pocket.

Change Your Lightbulbs

Switching from incandescent bulbs to Compact Fluorescent Light (CFLs) can help reduce carbon emissions by over 700 pounds. CFLs have a lifespan of 10,000 hours while incandescents only last 1,500 hours. While a CFL may cost you a few extra bucks initially, for each CFL you use you’ll end up saving around $35.00!

Get A Clothesline

Dryers consume more energy than any another household appliance. Give your dryer and your electric bill a break by hanging your clothes on a clothesline. If you don’t have the outdoor space, buy a clothes rack. You can find them relatively inexpensively at Target or Walmart. Did you know that your favorite appliances suck up energy even when they’re turned off? Vampire power or standby power costs Americans approximately $3 billion a year. Start unplugging your cell phone chargers, TVs, and microwaves when you aren’t using them. You’ll be amazed at how much money you can save on your energy bill just by making this simple adjustment.

Eat Less Meat

Meat production contributes to a number of environmental problems including air pollution, loss of biodiversity, water pollution, and climate change. In fact, eating 1 pound of meat emits the same amount of greenhouse gases as driving an SUV 40 miles. By using a meat substitute in one meal a week, you’ll be drastically reducing your carbon footprint. And since meat is one of the most expensive things you can buy, you’ll be cutting your grocery bill too.

Reduce, Reuse, and Repurpose

It may be tempting to purchase that new entertainment center or the expensive new handbag. Why not try finding an old, discarded piece of furniture and slapping a coat of paint on it? Cheap Christmas Gift Ideas!

With the holidays approaching, everyone is looking for inexpensive Christmas gift ideas. I know that I always spend a little too much money trying to create some Christmas cheer. The majority of my cash goes to gifts for my nieces and nephews. I buy them a bunch of toys that they use once and then throw in the bottom of their never ending toy boxes. This year, I decided to do things a little differently. Rather than buy them some expensive toys that they’ll never use, I’ve decided to make my nieces and nephews their own personalized coloring books.

This is a great and simple way to create an inexpensive but special gift. There are plenty of websites that offer free coloring pages. Find some pages that have characters or things that your niece, nephew, friend or child loves. Print them out and compile them in a little book. Make a cover page with a colorful piece of paper. You can make your own activity pages – mazes, word searches, matching games. Get a couple of fasteners and you have a one of the kind activity book. What I love about this idea is that you are giving a child something that will stimulate their imagination and creativity.

Another great idea is making your child their own personalized story book. Buy an inexpensive children’s book. Cut out pictures of your child and paste them over the illustrations of the main character. He will love be the star of his own book! It’s a great way to make your child feel special while spending less than you would on a happy meal.
